If this is the end for Ervin Santana, the Twins got their money's worth
Mon, 20, Aug 2018 12:46
If this is the end for Ervin Santana, the Twins got their money's worth

Ervin Santana’s Twins career appears to be over, and if so it looks like this: Hideous, ugly bookends on an otherwise nice shelf. It started about as poorly as could be imagined, with Santana getting suspended 80 games for a positive PED test just days before the start of the 2015 season (and about an hour before the Star Tribune’s special Twins section was set to print, sending everyone in the office scurrying to remake countless pages that involved Santana). It’s ending about as poorly as could be imagined, with Santana’s finger injury slow to heal this spring, then still bothering him through five very rough starts in 24.2 innings, before landing him back on the disabled list again with barely more than a month left in a lost Twins season. It seems unlikely Santana will pitch again, and it’s even less likely that the Twins will pay him a $14 million salary (team option) in 2019 and instead will spend $1 million to sever ties. Don’t let that influence you too much, though, when considering Santana’s complete body of work. From the time came back in 2015 midyear through the end of the 2017 season, he was everything advertised and more. The totals over that 2.5-year span: 80 durable starts, a 3.47 ERA, seven complete games, four shutouts and an All-Star Game appearance in 2017. He was one of the lone bright spots during the (almost) Total System Failure of 2016, and there’s no chance the Twins win 85 games and qualify as a Wild Card in 2017 without Santana’s 16 wins, 3.28 ERA and 211.1 innings. His playoff start in Yankee Stadium was a clunker, but it’s probably safe to say the finger was a problem. He’s also not the first Twin to have a bad game in October in New York, nor will he likely be the last. In terms of clubhouse influence, it’s been written that Santana was a positive role model for Jose Berrios and other young pitchers. Former GM Terry Ryan had a checkered history with mid-level free agent pitchers. Ricky Nolasco, on a four-year deal similar to Santana’s, was a disaster. Phil Hughes was great in 2014, but Ryan was too quick to extend a team-friendly deal that quickly went south when Hughes developed injury woes. Mike Pelfrey wasn’t outrageously expensive, but Ryan got what he paid for (and went back for more). Santana, though? He delivered on his contract even when considering the awful bookends. He did so with the eye test. And he did so with FanGraphs’ analytics-based approach. Consider: Santana’s deal was worth $55 million guaranteed over four years, though it was more like $49 million considering he forfeited about $6 million in 2015 from the suspension. FanGraphs says Santana was still worth $11.3 million in 2015, $25.8 million in 2016 and $22.9 million last season based on his performance. This year has been rough, with him being a minus-$4.1 million in those five bad starts. But add it up, and the total value is $55.9 million. For the better part of his deal, Santana was an above-average starter on a team desperate for one. It didn’t start well or end well, but he should be appreciated and he will be missed.

College football coaches: Ferentz, Kiffin among most overrated

Welcome to the Monday edition of The Cooler, where I can tell your exact age depending on how many times you remark today that we “need the rain.” Let’s get to it: *CBS Sports polled the 129 active FBS college football head coaches and received responses from about one-fifth of them for an anonymous series on a variety of issues related to the sport. The most recent item of note: Coaches were asked to identify among their peers the most underrated and overrated coaches in the business. On the overrated side, Willie Taggart (Florida State) and James Franklin (Penn State) pulled in 20 percent of the vote apiece. Right after them? Two guys with some local interest in Gophers rival Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz and Bloomington Jefferson graduate Lane Kiffin, now of Florida Atlantic. Both guys got 13 percent of the vote. One coach wrote of Kiffin, the son of longtime NFL coach Monte Kiffin: “If you’re born on third base, that’s great, but don’t think you hit a triple.” The underrated votes were spread a little more evenly, and it should be noted that Ferentz also got some votes in that poll (though not enough to crack the leader board). And no, there is nary a mention of Gophers coach P.J. Fleck anywhere in the piece. *Lindsay Whalen’s final regular-season home game with the Lynx drew an announced crowd of 13,013 (some convenient rounding, perhaps, by the Lynx to get a pair of Whalen’s 13s in there) and resulted in an 88-83 victory over Washington that showed the Lynx can still be a force. Remember, through all the ups and downs this season the Lynx did manage a seven-game winning streak at one point. They’ll need two road wins in the single-elimination part of the WNBA playoffs, starting with Tuesday’s opener at Los Angeles, to extend Whalen’s career and give her at least one more home game in the playoffs. *ESPN’s Matthew Berry has his first fantasy football Love/Hate column for the 2018 season, and it includes some interesting thoughts at the tight end spot. He loves Kyle Rudolph of the Vikings but hates new Packers TE Jimmy Graham. He writes of Graham: “You would think that playing with Aaron Rodgers would increase the value for all involved, but just 17 percent of Rodgers’ touchdown passes during the past decade have gone to the TE position and the Packers haven’t produced a top-10 tight end since Jermichael Finley in 2011.” *The Twins are 59-64, five games under .500. They’ve reached that threshold a few times in the last couple months as they tried to stay relevant, but they haven’t reached four games under since they were 33-37 on June 20 — exactly two months ago.

Who's in? Who's out? A 53-man roster projection for the Vikings

Who's in? Who's out? A 53-man roster projection for the Vikings

Deliberations are ongoing at TCO Performance Center in Eagan as the Vikings prepare for exhibition No. 3 on Friday. Among the decisions to be made are which intriguing reserves will get the most playing time to prove themselves in Friday’s second half and the preseason finale Aug. 30 in Nashville. Less than 48 hours after the Titans game, the Vikings will have to cut 37 players to form the initial regular season roster. Even more will be waived if general manager Rick Spielman trades for — or acquires from another team’s cuts — let’s say, offensive line help. So, armed with half the preseason and entire training camp of evaluations, here is the Star Tribune’s first 53-man roster projection for the Vikings. Quarterbacks (2) QB Kirk Cousins, QB Trevor Siemian Waived: QB Kyle Sloter, QB Peter Pujals Why: The past two seasons, the Vikings have kept two active quarterbacks and one on the practice squad. Sloter is again a prime practice squad candidate, if he clears waivers, after looking serviceable in two preseason outings to date. The Vikings should want to see better practices from Sloter before using a third roster spot on the quarterback. Running backs/fullback (4) RB Dalvin Cook, RB Latavius Murray, FB C.J. Ham and RB Roc Thomas Waived: RB Mack Brown, RB Mike Boone, FB Johnny Stanton Why: Perhaps the roster’s most difficult decision will be made at running back, where Roc Thomas and Mike Boone have proven worthy of roster spots in two exhibitions. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Vikings go with either Brown, Thomas or Boone. But Thomas’ upside, especially as an elusive athlete in the open field, should intrigue John DeFilippo too much to let him go. Thomas has also shown improvement in pass protection, where Boone has struggled despite a hard running style that impressed against the Jaguars. However… Boone has proven the most durable this summer, with both Thomas and Brown nursing injuries. So, we’ll see. At fullback, Ham is very versatile and the group’s best pass protector next to Murray. Receivers (6) WR Adam Thielen, WR Stefon Diggs, WR Laquon Treadwell, WR Kendall Wright, WR Stacy Coley and WR Brandon Zylstra Waived: WR Tavarres King, WR Korey Robertson, WR Chad Beebe, WR Jake Wieneke and WR Jeff Badet Suspended: WR Cayleb Jones Why: The receiver battle hasn’t been as competitive as the Vikings expected, especially since the decision on the top bubble player — Cayleb Jones — is postponed four weeks due to his suspension for PEDs. Zylstra and Coley have battled injuries, but neither King nor Robertson have made strong pushes for their spots. When they’re healthy, both Zylstra and Coley are expected to contribute a lot on special teams. Coley has been perhaps the most disappointing due to a trio of offseason injuries, including the latest leg injury that has kept him out of the preseason. Still, the Vikings liked how he looked in the spring entering Year 2. Treadwell earned the No. 3 spot in practices over Wright. Tight ends (4) TE Kyle Rudolph, TE David Morgan, TE Blake Bell and TE Tyler Conklin Waived: TE Tyler Hoppes Why: Reserve Josiah Price is headed for I.R. after suffering a season-ending knee injury in practice last week. Conklin’s upside as a receiving threat gives the rookie an edge. Bell, the veteran blocking tight end, should warrant consideration as a special teams contributor even though he’s nursing an injury now. Besides, blocking tight ends become even more valuable when an offense has line issues. Offensive linemen (9) LT Riley Reiff, LG Tom Compton, C Pat Elflein, RG Mike Remmers, RT Rashod Hill, OT Brian O’Neill, OT Aviante Collins, G Danny Isidora and C Cornelius Edison Waived: G Colby Gossett, C J.P. Quinn, OT Storm Norton, OT Dieugot Joseph, C/G Josh Andrews, G Kaleb Johnson Why: Reserve guard Cedrick Lang is headed for I.R. after suffering a season-ending leg injury on Saturday. Nick Easton’s season-ending neck injury opens the door for Edison, who has started at center since Easton went down in training camp. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Vikings scan the waiver wire for other additions and/or make a trade for interior line depth. Defensive linemen (9) DE Everson Griffen, DE Danielle Hunter, DE Brian Robison, DE Stephen Weatherly, DE Tashawn Bower, NT Linval Joseph, DT Sheldon Richardson, DT Jaleel Johnson, DT Jalyn Holmes Waived: DL Ifeadi Odenigbo, NT David Parry, DE Ade Aruna, DT Curtis Cothran, DE Jonathan Wynn Why: The second-year Odenigbo made a strong case with his splash plays against Jaguars tackle Josh Wells, but the Vikings have a logjam at defensive end — where Odenigbo starred Saturday when Minnesota found itself down three ends (Griffen/Bower didn’t play and Aruna was injured). He’s added weight and moved inside, where the Vikings need reserve help. The rookie Holmes has shown promise as an interior pass rusher and pairs well as a backup with Johnson, who has been strong against the run this preseason. Linebackers (6) OLB Anthony Barr, LB Eric Kendricks, LB Ben Gedeon, OLB Eric Wilson, OLB Reshard Cliett and OLB Antwione Williams Suspended: LB Kentrell Brothers Waived: LB Devante Downs, LB Garret Dooley, OLB Mike Needham, OLB Brett Taylor Why: Cliett and Williams have separated themselves from the pack as sure tacklers heavily involved on special teams this preseason. Wilson, the undrafted Cincinnati product, has made a big improvement in Year 2 and could even be involved in a defensive subpackage this season. Downs, the seventh-round pick from Cal, is likely a priority addition to the practice squad. Defensive backs (10) CB Xavier Rhodes, CB Trae Waynes, CB Mackensie Alexander, CB Terence Newman, CB Mike Hughes, CB Marcus Sherels, S Harrison Smith, S Andrew Sendejo, S Anthony Harris and S Jayron Kearse Waived: CB Holton Hill, CB Horace Richardson, CB Trevon Mathis, CB Craig James, S Jack Tocho, S Tray Matthews Why: Hill, the pricey and talented undrafted addition, hasn’t shown enough to warrant a roster spot over the six corners listed. He’ll likely be a priority for the practice squad. Richardson has gotten reps over Hill in practice but could be headed for the practice squad in a second straight season. Sherels, in his ninth NFL season, should survive cuts again as the sure-handed punt returner while the Vikings work on ball security with Hughes, the first-round rookie who is the expected kick returner. Specialists (3) K Daniel Carlson, P Ryan Quigley, LS Kevin McDermott Waived: K Kai Forbath Why: Mike Zimmer spoke highly of Carlson after his NFL debut in Denver, which included six converted kicks (two field goals, four extra points) followed by another extra point against the Jaguars. Meanwhile Forbath, who has nearly kept pace in practices, missed a 41-yard field goal Saturday off the right post.

Sightings, satellites help track mysterious ocean giant

Sightings, satellites help track mysterious ocean giantThe sight of a basking shark's brooding silhouette gliding through the waters off western France is more than just a rare treat for sailors -- it is a boon for scientists trying to trace its secretive migrations across the globe. It may be the world's second largest fish, growing to more than 10 metres (35 feet), but the basking shark, or Cetorhinus maximus, is an enigma for scientists eager to help preserve the plankton-eating giant after centuries of overfishing. Hunted voraciously for its massive fin -- highly prized for sharks' fin soup in China -- as well as its oily liver and meat, global populations of basking shark declined precipitously during the 20th century.

New earthquake on Indonesian island Lombok triggers landslides

New earthquake on Indonesian island Lombok triggers landslidesA strong earthquake rocked the Indonesian island of Lombok Sunday, triggering landslides, damaging buildings and sending people fleeing just two weeks after a tremor killed more than 480 people there. The 6.3-magnitude quake, centred in East Lombok, struck at a relatively shallow depth of seven kilometres (four miles) and was felt across the island, officials said. It was the third major quake in less than a month to rock the island, after deadly tremors on July 29 and August 5 and numerous aftershocks. "The earthquake caused people to panic and flee their houses," national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told Metro TV. "There have been no reports of death or (serious) damage but people are traumatised." At least one person suffered minor injuries while two more fainted from shock, he added. Deadly earthquake strikes Indonesia's Lombok, in pictures Landslides were reported in a national park on Mount Rinjani where hundreds of hikers had been briefly trapped after the quake in late July. The park has been closed since then. Local disaster mitigation agency spokesman Agung Pramuja said several houses and other structures in the district of Sembalun, on the slopes of Mount Rinjani, collapsed on Sunday after being damaged by the previous two quakes. The structures included checkpoints once used by trekkers climbing the mountain, Pramuja said, adding that the exact number of damaged buildings was still being checked. Residents said the latest earthquake was felt strongly in East Lombok. "I was driving to deliver aid to evacuees when suddenly the electricity pole was swaying. I realised it was an earthquake. "People started to scream and cry. They all ran to the street," East Lombok resident Agus Salim told AFP. The tremor was also felt in the island's capital Mataram and on the neighbouring resort island of Bali.

Taiwan's president visits Nasa space centre, in a move likely to anger Beijing

Taiwan's president visits Nasa space centre, in a move likely to anger Beijing

Taiwan's president visits Nasa space centre, in a move likely to anger BeijingTsai Ing-wen, the Taiwanese president visited Nasa’s space centre in Houston on Sunday, in a move that indicates deepening ties between Taipei and Washington, but which is expected to infuriate Beijing.  The trip to the Johnson Space Centre in Texas marks the first time a sitting leader from the self-ruling island has entered a US federal building in an official capacity, although her presence in Houston and in Los Angeles a week earlier were only brief stopovers en route to Paraguay and Belize.  But even short transit stops on US soil have traditionally provoked a sharp response from China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory and has tried to undermine its sovereignty and stepped up pressure on the international community to exclude Taipei from global forums.  Taiwan’s population of 23 million meanwhile operates like any other democratic nation with its own government, currency, military and foreign policy and the majority of citizens identify as Taiwanese. Only 18 countries, mainly small Pacific islands and Central American nations, have formal ties with the Taiwanese government, however.  President Tsai visited the Nasa Johnson Space Centre in Houston Credit: Richard Carson/Reuters  The US has not officially recognised Taiwan since 1979, when it shifted its recognition to China’s communist government and imposed restrictions on visiting senior Taiwanese officials to keep Beijing on side.  Ms Tsai’s transit is the first stopover for the Taiwanese president since the US Congress unanimously passed the Taiwan Travel Act earlier this year, allowing US government figures up to cabinet-level security officials to travel to the island and high-level officials from Taiwan to enter the US. Previously US policy did not permit bilateral visits by Cabinet-level officials. But behind-the-scenes, democratic Taiwan has long had influential allies in Washington’s corridors of power, with high profile legislators giving a nod to its strategic importance to America’s interests in the Pacific region.  During her earlier stop in Los Angeles, Ms Tsai met with three senior US politicians, including California Representative Brad Sherman, who called for the president herself to be granted a trip to Washington, reported Politico.  Thank you @Astro_Ellen & @AstroIronMike for coming out on Sunday for a behind-the-scenes tour of @NASA_Johnson. Missed @space_station's #Taiwan fly-by by 23 minutes. Look forward to finding ways of how Taiwan can better support international space efforts. pic.twitter.com/QWOuXm761R— 蔡英文 Tsai Ing-wen (@iingwen) August 19, 2018 “I want to see one of the highest level” of visits between the US and Taiwan and that is to “welcome you [Tsai Ing-wen] in Washington DC,” he said.  Ed Royce, the House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, who also met with President Tsai, praised the “many positive developments in the US-Taiwan relationship this year.” He added: “By encouraging more frequent visits between our two peoples and governments, we further strengthen the critical US-Taiwan partnership.”  Washington has recently called attention to its positive relations with Taiwan amid soaring tensions with China over trade and Beijing’s territorial claims in the South China Sea.  “We’ll never know for sure if this [visit] is because of the Taiwan Travel Act or if it would have happened anyway because the Trump administration, as well as Congress, is filled with very enthusiastic supporters of US-Taiwan relations,” said Ross Feingold, a Taipei-based lawyer and political analyst. The hard work of the women & men of @houstonpolice in keeping @iingwen & the #Taiwan delegation safe & secure is tremendously appreciated. Many thanks for going above & beyond during our stopover in #Houston. JW pic.twitter.com/K67dWk4Wld— 外交部 Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ROC (Taiwan) (@MOFA_Taiwan) August 19, 2018 “It’s good that President Tsai was welcomed to visit this facility. Does it change what was already a positive trajectory of US-Taiwan relations? Probably not.” China would likely react with the “same style of anger and public statements that we have seen throughout any kind of stopover by the Taiwan president,” he told The Telegraph.  “The fact that it was a federal building doesn’t make it unprecedented if China was to do something like cancel bilateral scientific meetings,” he said.  Regardless of ongoing tensions with Beijing, Taiwan’s government was clearly thrilled by the invitation to Nasa. “#Houston, we’ve to a president! Couldn’t be more proud. @iingwen is the 1st leader of #Taiwan to tour @NASA_Johnson during a #US stopover. Thanks @Astro_Ellen for helping realize this milestone moment,” tweeted Joseph Wu, the foreign minister.  President Tsai also took to Twitter to express her gratitude. “Before we take off, I want to thank everyone involved for making my #Houston stopover a wonderful one filled with good memories. My administration will continue strengthening every aspect of #Taiwan-US relations. Until next time!”

Shots fired at US embassy in Turkey amid escalating row between Nato alliesSeveral gunshots were fired at the US embassy in Ankara from a vehicle on Monday, amid rising tensions between Turkey and Washington.  An unidentified assailant or assailants fired six bullets at an embassy security gate from a passing white vehicle around 5.30am local time, three bullets hitting an iron door and a window, the Ankara governor's office said in a statement. The early morning attack coincided with a deepening row between the two countries over the trial of a US pastor in Turkey. The embassy is closed this week for a public holiday to mark the Islamic Eid al-Adha festival. The attack on the embassy in the Turkish capital was a clear attempt to "create chaos", the spokesman for President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, condemning the early morning drive-by attack. U.S. forces to stay in Iraq as long as needed - spokesman

U.S. forces to stay in Iraq as long as needed - spokesman"We'll keep troops there as long as we think they're needed ... The main reason, after ISIS (Islamic State) is defeated militarily, is the stabilization efforts and we still need to be there for that, so that's one of the reasons we'll maintain a presence," Colonel Sean Ryan told a news conference in Abu Dhabi. The number of American soldiers could go down however, depending on when other forces from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation deploy to help train the Iraqi army, he said, adding that about 5,200 U.S. troops are currently based in Iraq. NATO defence ministers agreed in February to a bigger "train-and-advise" mission in Iraq after a U.S. call for the alliance to help stabilise the country after three years of war against Islamic State.

Tesla nears 3-month low as JPMorgan adds to deal doubtsSlashing its price target for Tesla Inc from $308 to $195, the brokerage said it did not believe Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk had funds for a plan announced by a tweet that said "funding secured" two weeks ago. Analysts from the U.S. bank had upped its forecast from $198 to $308 after a roughly $100 surge in Tesla stock following Musk's tweets on Aug. 7 and the note on Monday was the latest evidence of scepticism about the deal on Wall Street. People familiar with the matter said on Sunday that PIF, the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund that Musk says had been pressing to help fund the buyout, is in talks to invest in aspiring Tesla rival Lucid Motors Inc.

Brazil sends troops to Venezuela border after residents drive out migrants from improvised camps

Brazil sends troops to Venezuela border after residents drive out migrants from improvised campsBrazil will send troops to its border with Venezuela on Monday after residents of the Brazilian border town of Pacaraima drove out Venezuelan immigrants from their improvised camps, amid growing regional tensions. Tens of thousands of Venezuelans have crossed the border into Brazil over the past three years as they seek to escape the economic, political and social crisis gripping their country. The latest show of tensions began early Saturday, hours after a local merchant was robbed and severely beaten in an incident blamed on Venezuelan suspects, in Pacaraima, where an estimated 1,000 immigrants are living on the streets. Dozens of locals then attacked the two main immigrant makeshift camps and burned their belongings, leading Venezuelans to cross the border back into their home country. Shots were fired, stores were shuttered and debris littered the streets. As the Venezuelan refugee crisis spirals out of control, neighbors are abruptly closing their doors. Ecuador and Peru are tightening entry requirements. And in Brazil yesterday, a mob chased Venezuelan refugees back across the border and then destroyed their camp. pic.twitter.com/dtr9MiDrLt— Hannah Dreier (@hannahdreier) August 19, 2018 "It was terrible, they burned the tents and everything that was inside," said Carol Marcano, a Venezuelan who works in Boa Vista and was on the border returning from Venezuela. "There were shots, they burned rubber tires." Marcano said that some Venezuelans reacted to the attack by destroying a car with Brazilian license plates. She and her companions were among many who took refuge at checkpoints on the Venezuelan side of the border. Three Brazilians were hurt in the clashes, a spokesman for military police said. No information was immediately available on the state of the Venezuelans involved. A Venezuelan man, whose eye is infected with conjunctivitis, holds his son at the Pacaraima border control Credit: REUTERS/Nacho Doce The merchant who was attacked "is known, he is a neighbor, and there was indignation when it was learned that he had been robbed," a local told AFP on condition of anonymity. "People began to expel Venezuelans who were in the center of the city, forcing them to return to their country." Roraima state Governor Suely Campos made a plea to temporarily close the border and asked Brazilia to send security reinforcements to "face the increase in crime" she links to Venezuelans in the region. In turn, the public security ministry vowed to send a contingent of 60 troops due to arrive Monday to join teams in the area.

Tough talks, no agreements at Merkel, Putin meeting near Berlin

Tough talks, no agreements at Merkel, Putin meeting near BerlinKremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters no agreements were reached, but the meeting had simply been intended to "check the watches" after Merkel's meeting with Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi in May. Ties between the two countries have been strained since Russia's annexation of the Crimea region of Ukraine in 2014. "That’s why it is necessary to take measures against possible non-competitive and illegal attacks from the third countries in order to complete this project eventually," he told reporters shortly before Putin flew back to Russia. At the start of the talks, Merkel underscored her expectation that Ukraine should continue to have a role in gas transit to Europe, and welcomed the start of discussions among the European Union, Ukraine and Russia on that issue.
